PCA 2013 - Maroon, sanguine, and oxblood

Evidently all that time on set where so much attention is paid to color has bled over into real life and Jared and Jensen showed up color coordinated for their appearances on the People's Choice Awards.  SPN is responsible for the way I now over-analyze everything I see and I'm sure there was a reason why they chose this color.  If not, I will make one up like I do with each episode recap.  Therefore, like anything else SPN related, it deserves a meta.  Plus it's a great excuse to post pictures of gorgeous men and their luscious wives.

Let's start with identifying the color.  What significance could it possibly have?  To my eye that shops for clothing at Sam's Club when I have to shop at all, it looks like maroon.  It turns out to be "the" color for the fashion industry this season and it goes by another name.

Not knowing it was called something else, I figured I should learn about maroon.  Generally this is not a word with a happy history.  For our purposes, it's a dark brownish-red.  It is also a loud exploding firework, the act of abandoning somebody on a desolate island, usually without resources, and it referred to escaped slaves and their descendants in the 17th and 18th centuries in the West Indies.  On top of that, Bugs Bunny uses this botched pronunciation of the the word "moron" to insult his pal, Elmer Fudd.  "What a maroon."  It's really not a big surprise that the fashion industry didn't stick with this name.

But despite it's name, the color does have a few associations with positive qualities.  In heraldry, maroon in a coat of arms means patient in battle, yet victorious.  Apt description for getting Jared and Jensen back on the awards show.  In this case, the color also goes by the names sanguine or murray.  No, not Chad.

Sanguine is described as the color of blood or having a ruddy complexion.  It also meant cheerfully confident and optimistic.  Long before Myers and Briggs divided up the world into introverts and extroverts, Hippocrates thought that people's emotions were determined by fluids (humors) in the body.  This eventually led to dividing people into categories based on the four fluid systems in the body - blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm.  Thanks to Ben Edlund, we're familiar with most of them.

The temperaments are sanguine (pleasure-seeking and sociable), choleric (ambitious and leader-like), melancholic (introverted and thoughtful), and phlegmatic (relaxed and quiet).  I love knowing that my personality is driven by black bile and phlegm - it sounds like a punk rock band.  Since we're concentrating on sanguine, here's a bit more according to Wikipedia, the source of all knowledge.  The sanguine temperament is fundamentally impulsive and pleasure-seeking; sanguine people are sociable and charismatic. They tend to enjoy social gatherings, making new friends and tend to be boisterous. They are very much people persons, talkative and not shy. Sanguines generally have an almost shameless nature, certain that what they are doing is right. They have no lack of confidence. Sanguine people are warm-hearted, pleasant, lively and optimistic.  Based on that alone, it seems to fit with our guys, especially Jared.

Sanguine sounds like a name the fashion industry could have worked with, but no.  Martha Stewart's paint collection went with barn.  I can see why you might not want pants a lovely shade of barn.  Instead you can get pants in a shade of another term that conjures up pleasant images, oxblood.
I never thought I'd write a sentence about how good Jensen and Genevieve look in oxblood.

So why wear it, besides the fact that you look smashing in it?  Depending on how it is used, oxblood can carry some of the darker symbolism of red including anger, aggression, sin, Satan, death, or a sense of the macabre.  Blood red can also symbolize loyalty (a blood oath) and even life and love (blood being associated with the heart).  That sums up these guys' day jobs pretty well.  Here are a couple of other reasons why it works so well for these folks.

Because the color was invented for Genevieve who looked amazing in it.

Because Danneel could wear that awesome matching nail polish on fingers and toes and rock all that glittery gold and that glow.

Because although Jared's not a psychic, he played one on TV and knew that Maroon 5 would win the award they presented.

Because neither member of Maroon 5 accepted the award wearing it and somebody needed to. It's like shave and a haircut without the two bits.

Because green is its complementary color, what else was Jensen going to wear?

Playing ex-blood junkies and almost-vampires lends a certain familiarity with the color.

Who else do you want to be marooned on a desert island with? Jared would have to bring his own food.

Because you can line it with a blue that will match your boy's shirt and will color coordinate with the light fixtures at the auditorium. Bonus points for your hankie pocket thingy that matches his jacket, although you can't see that here.

Because you will all end up hanging out together before the night is over.  Anyone else with you has to be wearing gray tones.

Because someone at ZAP2IT will say this.

"Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles either called each other while planning their People's Choice Awards outfits this year, or they have ESP after eight years of playing ghost-busting brothers on "Supernatural." The guys took a rare break from filming in Vancouver to fly to LA and attend the show, and they were impressively color-coordinated. (This definitely earns them a spot on our next bromance list.)"

And this.

"As for best-dressed couple, we've got to tip our hat to "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel Ackles. He was dapper in an oxblood suit, and she chose a sequined gold minidress. No pregnant woman should look that hot; it's just not fair. (He also gets bonus points for color-coordinating with his costar Jared Padalecki. Real men match.)"

Because even the event organizers knew not to split up the guys by making either present an award with someone else.

Because oxblood looks so good in black and white.

Because these folks from the crew are really worried about fashion.

And because they've already dressed hapless SPN victims in this season's hot color.

Seriously though, everybody looked absolutely fabulous. Congrats to the SPN cast, crew, and fans.  Thanks for all the years of entertainment and the warm feeling of being part of a big extended family.

Caps from everywhere including Home of the Nutty.
