Alternatives to photobucket?

So Photobucket decided they are not going to allow us to link from their site to LJ unless we upgrade and if I'm reading it right, they want about $400 a year. Everything from all the reviews I've done is linked to PB. I don't even know where to start with this but $400 is out of the question. It feels like extortion. I haven't used the LJ scrapbook for much and the links don't work with DW and I just feel exhausted and frankly heartbroken thinking about it. Seasons of writing and work just totally screwed over. Any good ideas?

It's so unfair! I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

I use LJ scrapbook... it works great, and I copy and paste my LJ post codes to DW.

I'm not sure why, but my photobucket is still working ok. I have a yearly plan (the least expensive), and I hardly use it anymore, but I keep it for my older LJ entries.

I don't blame PB for trying to make money and wouldn't even mind paying for an account but for the amount I'd use it, the price they want is beyond what I can justify. It looks like google could host them. I'll have to get a google acount under something like my lj name though. I'm still looking at a ton of work to go move eveything from the old entries even if I just move them to the LJ scrapbook.. I guess maybe it will be a project for winter. Maybe I can do one entry a day or something to make it manageable. Bah! Thanks for the LJ scrapbook idea and that I can use it with DW.

I pay $40 a year, which is reasonable, but I'd never pay the huge amount they're asking now (for linking).

Doing one entry a day sounds like a good plan.

Thanks for the LJ scrapbook idea and that I can use it with DW.

You're welcome! It's much faster than using photobucket, and much more reliable.

GOODNESS. I know link decay is part of the life cycle of the Internet, but this Photobucket move seems determined to create graveyards! I'm sorry to hear the pricing is so wildly inflated. Fifteen years ago, hotlinking (displaying photos hosted by a third-party) was not part of Internet culture (at least as I knew it), but for most of the 15 years intervening, it certainly has been. Trying to force a shift back in such a drastic way is an interesting move, to be sure, and not one I see being lucrative for Photobucket in the long-term? Because at that price they're definitely looking for a professional-level audience but uh.

All the Photobucket users I even know aren't using them for professional/small business purposes. Those people probably have their own domain, or at least pay for server space somewhere. So on top of it being really frustrating and demoralizing, I'm not even sure this move makes sense to me. Long story short, that really sucks and I can't even imagine having a lot of images turn into broken links, held hostage by some bizarrely high, extortionist fee. :( (I mean, I'm certain that I do have some that fit the bill. But not enough for me to feel like it will be a loss to my work if I don't fix them.)

It certainly feels like extortion to me - and to do it so suddenly without any warning either - really poor customer service.

I use the lj photostream service for all my pics.
